I read Sassafras Lowrey’s piece on Vida, “Body of a Poem: From Zines to Novels, Genderqueer on the Page.” At first, I felt gently chided, called out for my acceptance/admiration of a system that overvalues “credentials” and keeps out so many voices. My quiet disregard for self-publication as an acceptable avenue suddenly embarrassed me, especially since I love zine and DIY culture.
